When you have pain in your head or face, it can be hard to ignore, and for good reason. Our George Ghaly, DDS team in Westborough, Massachusetts, recommends seeking timely treatment if you experience pain from any of the following, as they can be serious conditions.

Dental Abscess

When bacteria reach the nerves and blood vessels inside of a damaged tooth, this can cause infection of the tissues. You can get an infected tooth if you have a tooth with a crack in it, have a tooth which has extensive decay that is untreated, or even from untreated gum disease. How do you know that you might have an abscessed tooth? You may have this condition if you:

  • Experience a throbbing pain.
  • Have a bad taste in your mouth.
  • Have red gums.
  • Have a fever.
  • Have swelling in the face.

Sinus Infections

This infection of the sinus cavity is also called sinusitis. You may have sinusitis if you if you:

  • Feel aching pain in the face, often centered in the upper jaw and teeth.
  • Feel pressure around the eyes and cheeks.
  • Have facial swelling.
  • Feel ear pain.
  • Have bad breath.
  • Have a fever.

Dry Socket

When a tooth is extracted, or removed from the bone where it is lodged, sometimes a blood clot will fail to form properly or become dislodged, exposing the sensitive nerves and bone material. You may have a dry socket after an extraction if you have the following:

  • Severe pain.
  • Swelling of the gum tissue.
  • A fever.
  • A persistent bad taste in your mouth.

If you have any of the signs above, and you suspect you might have a dry socket, a sinus infection, or an abscessed tooth, please seek immediate treatment.
